Our early careers shape our view of working life and the way in which we approach working, managing and leading later. What sort of workers do we make if our relationships with them are shaped mainly by the things they don’t bring, rather than the things they do? Mondrem CIC are a small and growing company. We know that we will grow better if we create a place where everyone in the companies grows with us. A personally and professionally rewarding place to work, where we share a purpose and work together by making human connections and creating shared understanding. Where everyone has a role that they own and can see where and how it fits in. We’re a long way from perfect, so we don’t always get it right. But we’re not about to let that get in the way of our trying to do the right thing. To work, to manage and to lead in a good way.
Since early in 2020 we have worked closely with interns, several of whom now have permanent roles across the group of companies. We have been keen to give them all a great career start. To do that, we started by spending time building a shared understanding of our purpose and values. These are a significant part of what attracted people to us. And we gave everyone a leading role in some aspect of Mondrem’s work and growth. And have called everyone a ‘lead’, not an ‘intern’. Behind this is the notion of giving responsibility, not task. Encouraging new colleagues to own and shape their own roles to deliver both what the company needs and what makes their role interesting and rewarding for them. For our ambition to create a personally and professionally rewarding place to work, such awards are very special indeed.
From little acorns
Mondrem CIC was envisioned and created by Mike Astbury, then a lone man dancing on a hill with lots of belief, but not many followers. In 2018, he was joined by Lucy, whose optimism, drive and ambition would prove invaluable to our organisation. Together they set out with the mission to make public services brilliant. Everywhere and all of the time.
In 2019, Mondrem CIC moved to Keele University’s Smart Innovation Hub, an environment that fosters the development of ambitious, innovative young businesses and sector-leading academics and students. The energy of this new space immediately complimented the ‘Mondrem way’, allowing us to make strides in development, spurring innovation and encouraging engagement with talented humans.
As people and communities are at the centre of what we do, shortly after our move we became a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, or CIC. Becoming a CIC was another, rather important, steppingstone in Mondrem’s journey. Not only did this align more closely with our mission, allowing us to continue helping our public service clients to create and sustain great public services, but it also meant we were able to work with students and staff in our home at Keele University. We begun with four student interns, and have never looked back.
Since then, Mondrem CIC have stayed dedicated to supporting public services, we want them to be even better than the people connected with them imagine is possible – not just better than they are. Public services matter too much to be anything less than outstanding. We’ve also continued to work alongside our colleagues and friends at Keele University, and gone on to receive awards for our collaborations and cultivating talent.

“Having adapted their business overnight with lockdown restrictions, the interns drove the business transformation.”
